Beating Lensing Cosmic Variance with Galaxy Tomography

چکیده

I discuss the use of cross correlations between galaxies with distance information and projected weak lensing dark matter maps to obtain a fully three dimensional dark matter map and power spectrum. On large scales l . 200 one expects the galaxies to be biased, but not stochastic. I show that this allows a simultaneous solution of the full 3-D evolving galaxy bias and the dark matter power spectrum simultaneously. Within the photo-z information of the CFH lensing legacy survey, this allows a threefold reduction of statistical error, while a cross correlation with CLAR or other deep spectroscopic surveys allows a tenfold improvement in dark matter power accuracy on linear scales. This makes lensing surveys more sensitive to the cosmic equation of state and the neutrino masses.

Weak lensing reconstruction through cosmic magnification – I. A minimal variance map reconstruction

We present a concept study on weak lensing map reconstruction through the cosmic magnification effect in galaxy number density distribution. We propose a minimal variance linear estimator to minimize both the dominant systematic and statistical errors in the map reconstruction. It utilizes the distinctively different flux dependences to separate the cosmic magnification signal from the overwhel...

Galaxy-CMB and Galaxy-Galaxy Lensing on Large Scales: Sensitivity to Primordial Non-Gaussianity

A convincing detection of primordial non-Gaussianity in the local form of the bispectrum, whose amplitude is given by the ƒNL parameter, offers a powerful test of inflation. In this paper, we calculate the modification of two-point cross-correlation statistics of weak lensing—galaxy-galaxy lensing and galaxycosmic microwave background (CMB) crosscorrelation—due to ƒNL. We derive and calculate t...

Cosmic shear as a tool for precision cosmology: minimising intrinsic galaxy alignment-lensing interference

Cosmic shear leads to a correlation of the observed ellipticities of galaxies, an effect which is used to place constraints on cosmological parameters, and to explore the evolution of dark matter and dark energy in the universe. However, a possible systematic contaminant of the lensing signal is intrinsic galaxy alignment, with a correlation length of a few Mpc. Hirata & Seljak (2004) have rece...

Separating cosmic shear from intrinsic galaxy alignments: correlation function tomography

During the past couple of years, secure detections of cosmic shear have been obtained, manifest in the correlation of the observed ellipticities of galaxies. Constraints have already been placed on cosmological parameters, such as the normalisation of the matter power spectrum σ8. One possible systematic contaminant of the lensing correlation signal arises from intrinsic galaxy alignment, which...

Biased Dark Energy Constraints from Neglecting Reduced Shear in Weak Lensing Surveys

The weak gravitational lensing of distant galaxies by large-scale structure is expected to become a powerful probe of dark energy. By measuring the ellipticities of large numbers of background galaxies, the subtle gravitational distortion called “cosmic shear” can be measured and used to constrain dark energy parameters. The observed galaxy ellipticities, however, are induced not by shear but b...
